Diesel Engine Testing

V8 turbo diesel testing is a
reflectionofFord’scommitmenttoengineerandbuild
this all-new diesel engine “in-house” and to meet the
needs of the Super Duty customer
• 250,000-miledurabilitytestingisdesignedtoidentify
structural fatigue points of the powertrain components
by simulating the driving habits of Super Duty
customers who tow heavy loads
Test engines spend 1,200 hours at peak torque to test
thestrengthoftheengine’sinternalrotatingparts
• Thermalcycletestingstressesthecylinderhead
gaskets, engine sealing and cooling system
connections
Engines are idled, run at peak power until
components are red hot, then shut off and allowed to
soak while 16-degrees-below-zero Fahrenheit coolant
is pumped through the engine
The process repeats over and over for 150 hours
• Structuraltestingisruntoverifydesignparameters
including assessment of the effect of design tolerances
Engineers build engines with tolerance-limit parts to
simulate potential quality issues before they happen
to the customer
• Real-worldweartestingsimulatestheoperating
conditions of 250,000 miles over the toughest grades
in temperatures ranging from 40 degrees below zero to
plus 130 degrees Fahrenheit
This test cycle is the equivalent of 10 years in service
